Completely monotone function
In real analysis, a branch of mathematics, Bernstein's theorem states that every real-valued function on the half-line [0, ∞) that is totally monotone is a mixture of exponential functions. In one important special case the mixture is a weighted average, or expected value. Total monotonicity (sometimes also complete monotonicity) of a function f means that f is continuous on [0, ∞), infinitely differentiable on (0, ∞), and satisfies WebNov 2, 2012 · In this expository article we survey some properties of completely monotonic functions and give various examples, including some famous special functions.

WebA real-valued function f defined on (0,∞) is said to be completely monotone if it has derivatives f (n) of all orders and for each n = 0,1,2,..., (−1)n f (n)(r) ≥ 0,r >0. Bernstein’s theorem says that f on (0,∞) is completely monotone if and only if there exists a (not necessarily finite) measure Q on [0,∞) such that f (r) = R [0 ... Webthe gamma function via the notion of complete monotonicity. Hankel’s determi-nant inequality for completely monotonic functions is proved in [35, p. 167], and in [19] it is shown that in connection with an interpolation problem there exists a close relation between completely monotonic functions and completely monotonic sequences.

WebJul 15, 2012 · Introduction Completely monotone functions play an important role in many branches of applied mathematics, and probability theory. They are defined as the Laplace transforms ofmeasures on the half-line [0,∞). Closely related to these functions are the so-called Bernstein functions, which are the primitives of the positive completely ...
